Choosing the right type of render or roughcast can seem confusing, and we can explain a few of the features & benefits below. However, the easiest way to decide what’s best for your home, is to arrange a free survey.
Scratch
Render
Gives a sharp, fresh finish and comes in over 30 colours.
Acrylic
Render
This flexible, non-cracking render, comes in a huge choice of colours.
Roughcast /
Pebbledash
The most frequently-used exterior wall coating in Scotland.
Wetcast /
Harling
One of the most resilient and weather-resistant wall coatings.

Scratch Render
This render can be used both internally & externally. Relatively new to the UK, the render is scratched with a nail float, to create a weathered appearance…which is where the name comes from.
You have over 30 colours to choose from, all of which leave a fresh finish which will last for years to come (no fading). The only maintenance required is an occasional spray with a pressure washer. We apply this render by machine so, while the materials are more expensive than other renders, the application is much faster (and only one coat is required).
Acrylic Render
Sometimes referred to as silicon render, Acrylic Render is much stronger and more flexible than traditional rendering mixes. This means that it is much less likely to crack after application. Acrylic render comes in any colour you can imagine, leaves a perfect finish and will last for years.
We’ll often recommend Acrylic renders to refurbish properties with a history of substrate cracking and to coat the external walls on newer buildings. An acrylic render could also be the ideal solution if you have a larger property and little time for maintenance.

Roughcast / Pebbledash
This the most commonly-used exterior render in Scotland, for a few good reasons. There’s a huge choice of colour, is fast to apply and is very affordable. This coating is very weather-resistant hard-wearing and resistant and will not fade as all the elements are naturally coloured.
There is a mind-boggling amount of background renders and decorative aggregates, but we’ll help you choose the perfect combination for your home.
Wetcasting / Harling
Wetcasting or harling is one of the only traditional methods of protecting a building that is still used today. Applied correctly, this method is one of the hardest, most weather-resistant exterior render finishes available. This explains why harling is so popular in towns situated around the coast in Scotland.
We usually use Wetcasting when renovating older properties and listed buildings. When we combine this traditional coating with our modern methods of construction, we can make a stunning difference to the appearance of your property.
